In addition to my previous note of 09/07/23; According to information recorded in Modelmaster Publications (Jim Grindlay) BR steam locomotives 1948-1968 (which I would highly recommend for followers of BR steam, as well as authentic Ian Allan publications) no less than 64 of these 2F Webb designed coal tanks survived into BR days, the last few (except our example) being collectively withdrawn in 09/1955, though BR withdrawals (previously by the LMS) had begun in 01/1948 and several class members entered BR stock but were not renumbered into BR service. Our example lasted just over a decade in nationalisation, being withdrawn in 11/1958

we appear NOT to have its BR identity, ie No, 58926 (as depicted in 2012 with Album photography) recorded in its title (though LMS number of 7799 is!) though fifty members of the class survided into BR days in 1948!

This is one of the handful of survivors of the London & North Western's locomotives. Considering the vast numbers of locomotives of a plethora of types that the LNWR produced at Crewe over the years, it seems a pity that so few have been preserved.

But this Coal Tank is one of the few and belongs to the National Trust, an organisation you normally associate with historic buildings. It has recently been restored to its final livery of unlined British Railways black. In February 2012 it was teamed up with 0-8-0 No 49395, another LNWR survivor, to renact the final train between Abergavenny and Merthyr. This was a Stephenson Locomotive Society special originally and despite the snowy weather there was a good turnout for the event.

The album shot shows the loco in 1980 at the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The loco was then in lined LNWR livery.
