This, an example of the 'New L' class, is the last surviving steam loco from the North Staffordshire Railway. Like most UK systems, the 'Knotty' built some of its own locos, but the grouping of 1923 swept away many of those from consituent companies of the LMS, as that company sought standard types. This one survived, like so many pre-grouping gems, as a colliery loco. Recently it has moved from Cheddleton to Shildon, County Durham to the 'Locomotion' museum. This seems a pity, as it was nice to think that it was in Staffordshire. There is one other NSR loco in existance, but its a battery electric.
