The former Patons & Baldwins, Bagnall built 0-4-0F (Fireless) Works No. 2898, is being relocated to the new Whessoe Road Engine Shed, at Darlington in Durham, which is the new base for the Darlington Railway Preservation Society.

Stored in the 1833 goods shed at North Road, photography is very difficult without a fish eye lens. The loco is a typical UK fireless with the cylinders under the cab end and the exhaust pipe up the back of the cab. Note the bell, and the enclosed slide bars, as it operated on unfenced track. It has a rather comical and unconvincing dummy chimney at the front of the steam vessel, presumably to convince the doubters.

In 1947, Patons and Baldwins, a woollen yarn manufacturer, built a new factory in Darlington, on the line of the 1825 Stockton and Darlington Railway route. Naturally, the factory was rail served, and this little 0-4-0 fireless shunted in the factory yard. Built by Bagnalls in Stafford, despite Darlington's massive railway industry in those days, it is presently in store.
