I believe that the previous post is in error. The loco remains at Stockton as far as I know. It would be an enormous task to return this one to running condition.

The road works mentioned in the earlier note have now begun and the loco has moved to Preston Park, the coucil's museum until its future is decided. Why not keep it at the museum?

There are proposals to redesign the road junction here and replace the roundabout with traffic lights. This will, of course, mean some relocation for No 21, but the last word from the local council was that it would still be displayed near the road junction.

This old 'coffee pot' was stored for years in the open at Preston Park Museum in Eaglescliffe, and it deteriorated because of open storage. A recent initiative to improve roundabouts in Stockton on Tees has seen the loco cosmetically restored and plinthed at the junction of Bridge Road and Riverside. This site is only yards away from the site of the original Stockton and Darlington Railway terminus, so it has links to Stockton's railway heritage. The loco itself is a true northerner, being built only just across the river by Head, Wrightson & Co, a firm of ironfounders who built a few of these vertical boilered shunters late last century. It worked at Seaham Harbour until the 1960's, by which time the whole place was a living museum. The paddle tugs, coal staithes, chaldron wagons and the antediluvial locos were a real draw!
