SY 1770 was among the final batch of SYs to be built in the 1990s. Designed as the standard industrial steam locomotive of China the SY or Shang You which in Chinese means Aiming High or Reach Upward are famous as the last steam locomotives in production in the world. As over 1820 were built from 1960 right up till 1999 at a number of locomotive works across China at places like Tangshan, Sifang, Tongling, Jinan and Changchun works. But most of them in great number were built at Tangshan which was where the last ones were built in 1999. In the early 1990s 2 SYs which were built at Tangshan in 1989 were exported brand new to the U.S.A. for use on American Tourest Railroads. Those were SY 1647m now known as NY&SW 142 and SY 1658m now known today as New Haven 3025 at the Valley Railroad in Connecticut. SY 1770 is preserved and part of the Heritage fleet at the Tiefa Locomotive Museum where it is still in working order for special charter trains there.
