KD6 487 is the only ex United States Transportation Corp. S160 Class 2-8-0 that is still in China today. 40 of the USATC S160 2-8-0’s where sent to China in 1945 and they were Classed as KD6 on China Rail and were modified after their arrival in China, gaining larger cabs and new chimneys more suited to the generous Chinese loading gauge. KD6 487 was the last S160, KD6 2-8-0 still in service in China finishing its working days at Pingzhuang opencast coal mine in late 1996 when she was replaced by the SY Class 2-8-2’s steam locomotives from Tangshan works. She remained at Pingzhuang until 2004 when she was saved for preservation by the Daqing mining company at Diaobingshan in Liaoning Province in northeast China. which operated the Tiefa system which is today operated as a heritage operation and one of China’s first standard gauge heritage railways and KD6 487 is part of their museum steam fleet. The other ex USATC S160 2-8-0 that worked in China as a KD6 to survive in preservation is No. 5197 formerly KD6 463 which is preserved in the UK and can be found at the Churnet Valley Railway.

There are reports that KD6 487 the last KD6 S160 2-8-0 in China is also to take part in the annual steam locomotive festival on 19th - 21st January 2018 at Daqing as well for the first time since 2015. There where reports that its boiler ticket had ran out but it may have had a recent overhaul out there?

The KD6 are really American Army S160 2-8-0s which were classified as KD6 by the Chinese State Railways which 40 of them were sent to China in the late 1940s after the Second World War. Only two KD6 S160s are have to survive this one KD6 487 is the only one left in China today and preserved as part of the heritage fleet at the Tiefa Steam Locomotive Museum at Daqing, Liaoning in North East China. The other former KD6 S160 to survive is USATC No 5197 formerly KD6 463 which is preserved in the UK and can be found at the Churnet Valley Railway in Staffordshire.
