This locomotive has unfortunately been victim to the cutter’s torch this late in the game. It seems that preparations were being made as early as January, as evidence of parts harvesting (air compressor, anti-vacuum valves on the cylinders, and parts of the valve gear) surfaced online. As of March 9th, D52 1 is little more than wheels on a frame

Unfortunate news from JR Freight, who own and control the Hiroshima Works. In a recent press release, they have announced that D521, along with several preserved electric locomotives (pusher locomotive EF67-105, freight loco EF200-10, and the one-off multi-voltage prototype EF500-901), will be scrapped after a final photography event on November 1 and 2. They cite deterioration beyond repair as the reason for their decision.
