Like D51320 in Oiwake, D51241 is a stand-in for a stablemate that was lost in the Oiwake roundhouse fire on April 13, 1976. D51603, the last locomotive to receive heavy overhaul for revenue service in Japan and one of the 4 locomotives operating on the last day of mainline steam revenue freight service on JNR, was slated for preservation where D51231 now stands. A tragedy to say the least.
