This unit was built by Sharp Stewarts in 1898 for the JGR as a class 5650 (5655) of which 6 examples were produced. The engine worked for the JGR until the 1920s, when the entire 5650 class were transferred to the privately owned Tobu Railway company, with 5655 included. The class were renumbered in the 35-40 group and were reclassified as B4, with 5655 becoming B4 No. 40. The locomotive was retired in 1966 much like all the steam locomotives on Tobu Railway and is now displayed at Miyashiro in the Saitama Prefecture, Japan. It is 1 of 3 preserved 5650s.

Those distinctive sloping cylinders and the outside framed leading truck shouts Beyer Peacock. The number of surviving locos from this Manchester loco builder that show the same family appearance is quite considerable. They come in various wheel arrangements, but they all have the same. The Beyer Peacock genes are still found all over the world!
