Per the NGdiscussion forum 2007: >This 24" gauge Vulcan was built in 1906 for the Portland and Seattle and used in construction of the GN and NP. Sometime in the early 'teens it was sold to the West End Consolidated Mining Co. in Trona, CA where Walter Knott purchased it from in the 40's. (Jeff Badger) >I lived in Trona in the late 1950's and the old time West End folks said that Knotts only bought one of the locos. They said that there was another one buried in the waste lime pile just south of the main plant. I think it is one of those stories, I never talked to anyone that actually saw that loco get buried, though the plant did bury a lot of junk in that pile. (Max Cox)

On august 23, 1905, the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific railroads announce joint incorporation of the Portland & Pacific Railway Company. This linked Spokane, Washington, and Seattle, Oregon and provides a straight and relatively level route over the Cascade Range. this action, pert of great battle between the Union Pacific Railroad on the one hand and the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads on the other, greatly facilitates passage to Seattle from the east. No. 3 was part of that important history helping to build that rail line.
