The interchange for the factory where this engine worked, and the shortline servicing it was one of the last, if not the last place in the country where steam interchanged with steam. ET&WNC ran ex Southern Railway 2-8-0s 630 and 722 until they went back to the Southern Railway in 1964. This fireless engine ran at this plant until 1992, making it the second to last steam locomotive to be retired from commercial use in the United States.

It is not owned by ET&WNC RR (they went out of business a half century ago)... however, Elizabethton was a terminus fot ET&WNC. Photos of the locomotive as presently displayed are here.

I saw this locomotive two days ago, it is in better shape and has a green paint job. It is on display with a gondola and caboose.

I was lucky enough to see this engine running several times, and even got to sit in the cab once while under steam. I've uploaded some scans of pics I took the last time I remember it running, back in 1984...

I have photos of this thing somewhere in the files. Will try to search them out later today.
