Valley Railroad No. 3025 formerly SY 1658m is the second Chinese built SY Class 2-8-2 that was built at Tangshan Works for American Tourist Railroad use in 1989. It came to the United States of America on the same ship with sister SY 1647m (New York, Susquehana & Western No. 142) in 1990. 1658m went to the Knox and Kane Railroad in Pennsylvania the same year and ran there till 2002 when the Knox and Kane Railroad closed following the collapse of the Kinzua Viaduct that year. In 2008 the locomotive was damaged in a roundhouse fire which was mostly cosmetic but the SY was in good running condition still. Which saw it get sold to the Valley Railroad which using spare parts from China the SY was rebuilt to look like a New Haven Railroad J1 Class 2-8-2 and given the next running number in line 3025. Today 3025 or 1658m is still going strong since it entered service there in 2012.

The Knox & Kane Railroad, the company that provided freight and tourist travel over the Kinzua Bridge, will sell its entire inventory during an October auction in Marienville. Everything from steam engines and passenger cars to lanterns and railroad signs must go during the two-day auction slated for Oct. 10 and 11 in Kane, Nansen Junction and Marienville. Mike Peterson, owner of Mike Peterson Auction & Realty Service of Jamestown, N.Y., said he expects the auction to draw bidders nationwide. http://www.bradfordera.com/articles/2008/09/28/news/doc48d9ae2e480c0445264989.txt Mike Peterson Auctions http://www.petersonauction.com/

This photo is displayed under PA Knox & Kane #1658 and under NJ New York, Susquehanna, & Western #142. Although, the locomotives were quite similar, both cannot be in this same picture. The photo properties: http://www.steamlocomotive.info/locomotives/pa0074.jpg

This engine was built in China in 1989 to be sold to Slone Cornell for his Knox & Kane Railroad. The engine's original number was 1658, but later it became the 58. The 58 pulled tourists on a 96 mile journey across the great 300 foot tall Kinzua bridge until 2003 when a tornado destroyed much of the bridge. There was hope that the railroad could reopen but in March of 2008 an arsonist burned down the enginehouse and the 58 and another steam engine and a diesel, were badly burned. It's hard to say if the 58 will ever run again, but at least its identcal sister, the Susquehanna 142, still operates.

Are the locomotives going to be ok???

An arson fire early Sunday at a Biddle Street building in Kane caused $1 million in damage and severely burned two locomotives that were once used for Kinzua Bridge State Park tourist trips. Knox & Kane RR 2-8-2 #1658 was one of the victims, and damages are believed to be extensive at this time.

Does anyone know the status of this engine since the Knox, Kane, and Kinzua self-embargoed?

Certainly, the photo of the locomotive suspended on a crane was taken when the locomotive was being removed from the ship that brought it from China to the United Stats.
