Norfolk & Western 2156 has finally returned to the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis.

The rumors of 2156 going to Roanoke are indeed true. The museums have made an agreement to trade 2156 for a B demonstrator unit for 5 years. 2156 will be towed to VMT sometime this year.

Actually, 237 were built for the n&w with the first Y-1 995 in 1910, and Y-6b 2200.

Sometime in the not to distant future 2156 might return home to Roanoke to the Transportation museum to be displayed next to J-611 and A-1218. The three best built steamers all in one place.

Sorry, 334 were built for the N&W from 1910 to 1952 with the last one 2200.

2156 was one of 201 Y class engines built. She is also one of 4 N&W locomotives that were actually built in the Roanoke shops that still exists. She is classified as a Y6a.

Yep, I'd say this is a a true mallet. I mean, look at the size of tthe front cylinders.

Whats this locomotives condition?, its very difficult to find information and pictures of it on the internet. I'd love to see 2156 run again

The tractive effort that is listed on the page is approximately that usualy given as the tractive effort of the locomotive opperating in its compound configuration, or 126,838 lbs. It could also opperate simple for greater starting tractive effort. According to Wes Barris's page the tractive effort of N&W Y6a and b class locomotives when opperating simple was 152,206 lbs. I believe that this listing is consistent with others that I have seen.
