B&P 17 was built to the design of George Smith Griggs, Master Mechanic of the B&P from 1834 to his death in 1870. The locomotive may resemble some B&O engines but it is purely a Griggs design. Griggs was one of the most notable designers of his time and introduced many innovations including the brick arch in the firebox and the diamond stack.

This is a "dutch wagon" type locomotive. This type of locomotive was desined by the B&O if I am not mistaken, and where some of the few locomotives in the U.S. to be built with inside cylinders.
