The locomotive has an air powered whistle which belonged to the steam boat the village used to have.

The boiler is operational but the frame is cracked.

The locomotive has been awaiting restoration since 1979. The reason It has not been restored is due to funding. Lima northern #7 was very expensive to restore. If you can please set this locomotive to awaiting restoration instead of stored.

My apologies, somehow a series of ridiculous posts about the destruction of this locomotive slipped through our moderation process. I am pretty sure that I am at fault in this. The inaccurate notes have been removed.

The D&M 8 Is at a different spot in Greenfield village, its called the ghost train From what the workers told me, it currently resides at a spot the train ride passes by now and no longer by the roundhouse out in the back.

Unfortunately, 8 remains stored at the Henry Ford today and apparently, per a source with close ties to the institution, there is internal disagreement on its place at the museum. Individuals who do not wish to restore or even exhibit the locomotive have so far carried the day.

As of Fall of 2008, D&M #8 was more into the GVRR Roundhouse and is now waiting for a FRA Boiler Inspection. Clips of the locomotive move can be seen here below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In2sZtmyCsg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=072GTeIhe78

1914 Detroit & Mackinac Baldwin 0-6-0 No. 8 - The D&M locomotive is from the former Michigan Alkali Company and served as switchyard locomotive. The locomotive was thought to been scrapped in 1954, but actually was saved by Cap Pinkerton II of the Detroit & Mackinac Railway. The D&M rebuilt the locomotive during the 1970’s. It ran on a limited basis for their railroad employees until the steam locomotive, three passenger cars, and a caboose were donated to the museum in 1979.

This engine is NOT operational. It is currently sitting outside the Greenfield village roundhouse minus it's tender.
