After 13 years out of action the ex South African Railways Glasgow North British Locomotive Company built Class 24 2-8-4 No. 3620 has successfully completed its test runs at the Bellarine Peninsular Railway. During the locomotive’s restoration, several major changes and additions have been made to No. 3620 which is now equipped with air brakes and oil firing, along with a bell, smokebox headlight and front numberplates being fitted at its owner Mr Ian Welch’s request. All going to plan, No. 3620 should hopefully be hauling the ‘Q Train’ restaurant car service later on this month, along with many more trains at the Bellarine Peninsular Railway in the future.

3620 is a Class 24 2-8-4 of the former South African Railways. Built in Glasgow, Scotland by the North British Locomotive Company in 1949 it is one several South African steam locomotives that is privately owned by a New Zealander. It was overhauled in South African in 1996 before it was then shipped to New Zealand. In 2001 it was then shipped again to Australia for use at Cairns in Queensland from 2004 till 2006. The loco is currently in storage at Cairns.

so this locomotive was not built by any american builders. even though she has a american builders plate and bell on top of the smokebox. and headlight in the center of the smokebox. well thats very odd. the first time i laid eyes on that engine. i assumed she was american built.

The Cairns Kuranda Steam Train ceased operation in October 2004 because of finacial difficulties. As far as I am aware they have not restarted and 3620 is stored elsewhere. I have a photo of the whole loco in steam should you wish to replace this one. Phil

She was built by North British @ Glasgow in 1948, # 26332.

Roughly, 130 t, with about 11 t over the drivers, which are 4'3".

Cylinders are 23" x 26".

She runs @ 200 psi, & has ben converted over to oil (about 6.5 t), with original water capacity of about 22 t.

Probably works consistantly harder now than she ever did in her SA life. A testament to the sturdy construction techniques of days gone.
