Ordered by BHP Co. intending to be used at Broken Hill. Found to be too heavy for their light track. Was exchanged for 18 months with a lighter South Australian Railway loco. Transferred to Port Pirie Becoming SAuR number 0. Returned to Broken Hill and hired to Silverton Tramway who numbered her 6. A few months later went to work at BHP newly acquired blast furnace in Broken Hill. In 1902 transferred to BHP steelworks at Whyalla becoming their number 2.

In 1963 the steelworks internal railway converted to standard gauge making number 2 redundant. Put on display on Whyalla beach front, on the banks of Spencer Gulf, even though Whyalla is over 100 miles from the open sea. Spencer Gulf is sea water and No2 suffered from the salt air.

In 1983 moved to Mt. Laura Homestead museum in Whyalla. Today Whyalla steelworks has a standard gauge line to Port Augusta built in 1972 but their ore still comes from the nearby mines to the steelworks by 42 inch gauge railway.
