The R class totalled 30 locomotives built from 1886 to 1895. The first 6 were built by Dubs in the UK and rest by James Martin, South Australia. These were all modified from 1900 to 1911, being rebuilt with larger boilers and becoming the Rx class. A further 54 locomotives were built from 1909 as Rx class making a total of 84 Rx class

Rx93 was one of the original imported engines, entering service in 1886. Withdrawn in 1966 she is the only one of the 30 original R class left. Went first to Mile End Museum and later new Port Adelaide Museum. She is also the oldest Rx class preserved.
