Originally numbered M10, this was the last steam locomotive built for the Tasmanian Railways. It became M2 when some sisters were converted to Ma class. Last ran in July 1961. Her good boiler was removed and fitted in Ma2. She received the well used boiler from Ma2. Her tender bogies found another use and what remained was later scrapped. She was plinthed in a playground in Stanley near the sea. Even when painted the salt air caused a lot of damage. She was later sold and arrived in Tanfield. The photo by Steve is almost the state in which she left Australia.

A long way from home, but, nevertheless, at home. Tanfield has set out to preserve locomotives built on Tyneside, and has one of the biggest collections of locos built in north east England to be found anywhere. Most are industrials, and they include some that worked in the North East, but were built elsewhere. This one is, of course, an export model, and, as a pacific, is distinct from the 0-6-0 and 0-4-0 tank engines that dominate this collection.

It couldn't have worked much further away from home, really, and represents a modern design for export. Although partially stripped, all the bits are there, although not on the photo. Nearby is the cab, some boiler cladding and the tender and its bogies. However, its unlikely to run again as there is hardly any 3'6" gauge track in the UK (except the Snaefell Mountain tramway in the Isle of Man), so it may be restored as a static exhibit eventually. Photo taken in August 2003.
