This forty inch gauge saddle tank 0-4-0 steam locomotive was built by the H.K. Porter Company during 1921 for the Defiance Coal Company of Mentmore, New Mexico; unfortunately its builder’s number has been obscured by history to this observer. This locomotive was acquired by the Rail City Museum in Sandy Creek Township in upstate New York in January 1953; acquired at the same time as this locomotive were ten mine run coal cars from the Gibson Coal Company. The locomotive was put on display at Rail City; remaining there until the museum was broken up. In the Fall of 1982 the number 1 was acquired by John Degan of Southampton, New York who mounted it on a truck trailer and began its first restoration to operable condition. During this restoration it was converted from a saddle tank locomotive to a side tank locomotive. Mr. Degan also acquired at least two of the mine run coal cars. At the end of the restoration the number 1 was named “Roy Dunwell” after the welder who had done so much of the work to make it operational. Mr. Degan proudly operated the H.K. Porter number 1 occasionally over the years. The Railroad Museum of Long Island (“RMLI”) acquired the locomotive and its accompanying cars as exhibit pieces by donation during Columbus Day weekend 1999. The two mine run coal cars were restored with new wood parts and were put on exhibit during 2017 in Riverhead.

At SRR undergoing restoration. Expected completion Spring 2017 when it will return to RMLI, Riverhead, NY and operate on a special rigged trailer. It is expected to use wood as a fuel. This engine was on display at Sandy Pond Steam museum, then sold to John Degan, Southampton NY. He had the saddle tank removed (no good) and side tanks added. H K Porter current class B-SS

#1 is currently being rebuilt by the Strasburg railroad and should be running this year

# 1 is a Porter not a Davenport and was built in 1921. # 2 is the Davenport
