Wa165 is domiciled in Gisborne on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

Population of Gisborne is about 35,000.

The loco is operated by Gisborne City Vintage Railway Society, who also own a number of passenger coaches. These have been rebuilt to a very high standard to match the locomotive.

From time to time the Society runs return trips out to Matawai about 15 kms from the town centre. Sometimes they run further out to Beach Loop which is a spectacular spot high on the cliffs above the Pacific Ocean.
