In 1956 when Ab 745 was crossing a rain weakened embankment near Hawera the embankment collapsed taking Ab 745 with it. Ab 745 was buried where it lay & was recovered in 2001. Only the locomotive was recovered, the tender being in poor condition was left behind. After a couple of owners the locomotive was acquired by the Rimutaka Incline Heritage Trust in 2013. The current boiler on Ab 745 was used for heating glass houses before being purchased as a spare if required for Ab 608. The trust has a spare chimney to replace the current attachment to the boiler.
