The Midland Railway - Butterley has launched an appeal to have the unique British Caprotti valve gear fitted BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73129, overhauled back into steam again. The estimate cost for the overhaul will be in the region of £400k, which details for donations to their "Standard Five Fund" can be found on their website and social media pages.

The unique British Caprotti valve gear fitted BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73129, will be brought outside for display during the Midland Railway - Butterley’s Ale on the Rails 200 gala being held on the 19th and 20th of July 2025, prior to it move to Derby to take part in the Greatest Gathering in early August.

Although it won’t be in steam, it has been announced that the unique British Caprotti valve gear fitted BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73129, will be taking part on display with many other locomotives from around the UK at the Greatest Gathering at Litchurch Lane works in Derby as part of the Railway 200 celebrations from the 1st to 3rd of August 2025. To mark 200 years of opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and 200 years of the modern railway we all know and use today. The event will also be a home coming for the locomotive as No. 73129 was built at Derby works in 1956.

The unique British Caprotti valve gear fitted BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 No. 73129, is currently on static display in the museum shed at the Midland Railway - Butterley, while it awaits its turn for overhaul.

This loco is the only surviving example of the 30 British Railways Class 5 locos equipped with British Caprotti valve gear. This feature can be seen in the photo of the loco. The poppet valves made running at very short cut off possible.
