Sentinel's unique vertical boiler and chain drive locos found favour with industrial users throughout the UK, but they were also operated by the large main line companies. They used them in places where a very small shunting loco was required, and the Sentinel with its ability to raise steam quickly fitted the bill well.

This one was supplied to the London and North Eastern Railway and spent its working life at the Geneva permanent way depot in Darlington. The string of numbers at the top of the page for the loco represents the various renumbering schemes of the LNER, followed by nationalisation, and lastly, the number it runs under today, from transfer to the departmental stock list.
