Great news. The sight of this old locomotive left out in all weathers always was depressing. Hopefully the Tanfield lads will be able to resurrect the engine.

The former South Durham Steel & Iron Co. South Durham Steel & Iron Co. 1900 built 0-4-0ST "South Durham Malleable No. 5", has been donated to the Tanfield Railway by Beamish Open Air Museum and the locomotive is now relocating there where they plan to fully assess the locomotive and restore it.

This loco has had a basic repaint for 2018 and has had its brass plate re-attached to the saddle tank. This work has improved its appearance superficially, but a full restoration it is not!

It was the first engine restored at Tanfield Railway. last time I was at Beamish it had moved inside the shed.

No5 was steamed in the 1970s at Tanfield Railway when Beamish Museum also used the Marley Hill Shed to house its locomotives. By the time the Beamish Loco collection had moved to the Beamish Museum Site No5 was out of use and has been ever since.

Although it would be great to see it run again. A future project?

South Durham "Malleable No. 5" was an example of a colliery 'works' locomotive, assembled at uncertain date from spare parts of other engines. Its builder and date are therefore lost to history. It is likely that some at least of the parts came from a Black, Hawthorn locomotive.

The locomotive has been steamed in recent memory but is not in working condition at Beamish. It has only been cosmetically restored to delay further rusting.
