Great Western Railway 4-6-0 No. 4979 'Wootton Hall'
Preston, Lancashire, UK
Location: Ribble Steam Railway
Status: Restoration

4979 has moved to the Ribble Steam Railway where the Furness Railway Trust are preparing to restore it to running condition. As the photo shows, it was essentially in ex-scrapyard condition, but this doesn't take account of the efforts the Trust has put in gathering parts to get ready for the job.

It will take some time before we see 4979 in steam again, but if anyone can do it the Furness people can.

'Wooton Hall' is at the Appleby Heritage Centre, which undertakes restoration of vintage rolling stock and gives experience to young people in this kind of work. The loco belongs to the Furness Railway Trust who have worked wonders on other locos in the past, but this one awaits their magic touch. It is really still in ex - scrapyard condition with some conservation until funding exists to complete the job. The tender tank, for example, is rotted out, as are the cab side sheets. These are the visible things that need attention only.
