This is the history and detail of BR built LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2T No. 41313. Built in 1952 by British Railways at Crewe, No. 41313 is a 2-6-2T tank locomotive, part of the Ivatt-designed Class 2MT. These engines were designed for light branch line duties and were renowned for their adaptability and excellent performance on winding routes on the LMS system and other parts of the British Railways network. No. 41313 worked its entire life across the length of the Southern Region, being based at Exmouth Junction, Three Bridges, Faversham, Barnstaple, Brighton and Eastleigh during its BR career. One interesting note is that during its mainline career, No. 41313 was used as a tester for empty coaching stock workings between London Waterloo & Clapham Junction, which was highly successful, leading to the class being the eventual replacement of Drummond’s M7 Class 0-4-4T locomotives on these duties. The locomotive was withdrawn from service by British Railways in November 1965. The following year, No. 41313 was transferred to Barry Scrapyard in South Wales, where it would remain until it was purchased for preservation by The Ivatt Trust in 1975. Saved from scrapping, No. 41313 was moved to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, alongside with sister engine No. 41298 and Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 Mogul No. 46447. The Ivatt Trust moved to a decision that both No. 41313 and No. 41298 would be restored to working order and operate trains on the Isle Of Wight Steam Railway. This was a poignant move as it was intended that Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2Ts were going to replace the ageing Adam’s O2 0-4-4T locomotives if steam had gone beyond the eventual phasing out of steam traction on the Island in 1966. The restoration of No. 41313 began in 2006, taking place at both Haven Street on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and at Cranmore on the East Somerset Railway. After 11 years, No. 41313 returned to steam in June 2017 alongside her sister No. 41298 before heading back to the Isle Of Wight and entering service on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in May 2018, where it has been operating ever since as well as occasional visits to other preserved railways on mainland UK.

During its second visit to mainland UK, BR built LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2T No. 41313, will be visiting the Swanage Railway for the first time for their Spring Steam Gala from the 28th to 30th of March 2025. A fitting visit then as in steam days the LMS Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T locomotives had worked all over the southern region and would have been seen on the Swanage Branch during the days of steam with British Railways during the 1950s and 1960s.

This useful small tank loco is in unrestored condition, having been stored at Quainton for a number of years since leaving Barry scrapyard in 1975. It will be moving across the Solent to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway this summer where restoration to running order should begin. Strangely, no LMS designed 2-6-2T ever worked on the island, although there were plans for some to do so in the 1960s. It will need Westinghouse pumps for air braking, and the 1960s drawings for this job have been located. Isn't steam preservation strange sometimes?
