Some wonderful news has come for Furness Railway No. 25. After many years in storage at Carnforth Depot in Lancashire the locomotive has been donated to the Furness Railway Trust owners of Furness Railway No. 20. No. 25 had been owned by the late Bert Hitchen who had plans to fully restore it to working order in its industrial saddle tank form. The locomotive will be moving to the Furness Railway Trust base at the Ribble Steam Railway at Preston in Lancashire.

Built originally as a tender engine, it was subsequently rebuilt as a saddle tank loco. It was sold out of service by the Furness Railway, eventually becoming Barrow Steelworks No 17. Sister loco, Furness No 20, has been rebuilt back to its original form and the result can be seen at Haverthwaite.

This very old loco has been in storage for a very long time, which is a shame because it is one of the few survivors from the Furness Railway, and one of the older locos still extant. The good news is that I was told at Carnforth today (7.26.08) that she's been sold to a new owner and that restoration should follow. The saddle tank, chimney and dome cover are stored on another part of the site at the moment. Watch this space!
