'Derwent' was built in Darlington by Kitching, but it is, in spirit, a Hackworth type of loco. The main features of this are the double tenders - one at each end. The leading tender is for coal fuel, as the boiler was stoked from the chimney end - note the vestigal smokebox - the firehole lies below this. Hackworth favoured a return flue - U shaped, which meant that locos were fired from the front end. This was antiquated in 1845, but they still built them! The cylinders, on the other hand, are at the back, driving forwards onto the leading coupled axle. The second tender is merely for the water tank. Note the wheels which are the cast iron 'plug' type of the old Stockton and Darlington type as on 'Locomotion' also in the Darlington museum.

'Derwent' ended up as an industrial loco for Ashmore, Benson and Pease in Darlington, then was plinthed on Darlington's Bank Top station before becoming part of the collection at North Road museum in 1975. This is an unusual museum in that it is housed in North Road station which dates from the 1840's and is still in use as a station on the Darlington to Bishop Auckland branch.
