Having hauled its final trains at the Middleton Railway today, the ex North Eastern Railway Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 has now been withdrawn from service having come to the end of its boiler ticket at last. Its unknown when No. 1310 will have its next overhaul so the locomotive will be stored and displayed in the museum shed at the Middleton Railway for the time being.

The ex North Eastern Railway Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 is still operational but only for one more week as No. 1310 is to work its last trains at the Middleton Railway on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of April 2023.

Having worked its final trains at the Middleton Railway’s First and Last Chance Gala last weekend the former North Eastern Railway Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 has now been withdrawn from service having now reached the end of its boiler ticket and is now awaiting overhaul.

Following a inspection the ex North Eastern Railway Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 has been given a extension to its boiler ticket and will now remain in service at the Middleton Railway until January 2022.

The ex North Eastern Railway H or LNER Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 has now been withdrawn from service for its 10 year overhaul which is intended to be a quick turnaround to get it back into steam again.

The former North Eastern Railway H or LNER Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 will be visiting the Elsecar Heritage Railway during August 2019.

The North Eastern Railway H or Y7 Class 0-4-0T No. 1310 is visiting the Mid Suffolk Light Railway from August till September where will be with its younger sister 985 there. The pair will be running together at the there Steam Gala on the 9th and 10th of September there.

So small, you wonder where to put in the key to wind it up! The NER class H of Wilson Worsdell's design was a small dock tank loco. Built at Gateshead works (only recently have the buildings been demolished) in 1891, it shows the completely different approach to designing a small 0-4-0 tank loco that a main line company took from the approach of the independent loco firms like Peckett, Barclay, Hawthorn and Bagnall.

Where the builders of industrial 0-4-0s would opt for outside cylinders, inside valve gear and a saddle tank, the NER went for the same layout that was always used by such companies, only smaller. In the best British design traditions of the time, all the vulgar machinery was hidden between the frames, and neat side tanks were provided. this didn't do wonders for access to the machinery at the best of times, but on such a small loco, it must have been particularly poor, especially considering that the crew remain the same size no matter what size loco they're handling!

1310 survived withdrawal as long ago as 1931 (from Tyne Dock shed) by being sold for further use to the nearby Pelaw Main colliery, ending its career there in 1964, after which it was preserved. The primary photo was taken following it's recent (2012) overhaul and the album photo when it was on display at Preston Park, Stockton on Tees, as part of the celebrations for 150 years of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1975.

Notice the change to the livery. The 1975 photo shows the earlier 'Gateshead' style paintwork, and the primary photo the simpler, later livery.
