Shay 5 has had all her funding completed and has been moved to the front of the shop in hope of being the first steam locomotive to run for 2017.

Shay 5 has past her hydro test and the only problem preventing her from running in 2016 is lack of money.

This locomotive has not yet been returned to service. The earliest return is most likely Summer-fall of 2015.

The bottom of the smoke box has been removed and a replacement will soon be installed. There is a slight chance that #5 might run this summer.

I visited the steam department today and a guy said that the shay will not run this summer.

Recent posts on the IRMlist indicate that this Shay has moved into the steam shop to be prepared for operation. Tubes must be installed and the boiler must pass an FRA inspection.

The locomotive is getting new flues and tubes in the boiler and once that work is done the locomotive will be back in service.

This locomotive has not operated in quite some time.  I do not know what is being done to it at this time though.

Only a small thing really, but our correct name is Illinois Railway Museum not Illinois Railroad Museum as noted in the ownership record for shay no. 5. This is a common mistake made by many ( but not repeated everywhere on your fine site) so has to some extent become a pet peeve of the members nad officers. Bob
