The Isle of Man was always 2-4-0T country, with very rare exceptions. The Isle of Man Railway and the Manx Northern both ran 2-4-0T fleets, but the MNR favoured Sharp, Stewart products (none survive) whilst the IoMR favoured Beyer Peacock's locos. Several series of these exist, from the pioeer locos right up to the last IoMR loco, 'Mannin'. No 10, 'G.H.Wood' is one of the Edwardian batch of 1905 and is shown here at Port St Mary on a very wet afternoon in August 1970. It is hauling a Port Erin to Douglas train. The Beyer Peacock characteristics are all there - the outside framed bogie, the lack of a bunker behind the cab and the angled cylinders. Most of them had their number in brass numerals on the chimney.
