In 1941 Brookes Chemicals Ltd who were based near Halifax, took delivery of this standard 14 inch cylinder Hunslet saddle tank loco to shunt their private sidings. The factory closed in 1969 and Brookes No1 was sold to a scrap merchant along with two other locos. That could have been the end of the line for this loco, but it was quickly resold to the new tenants of the works, who kept it on static display for a couple of years before it was sold to a private owner. After several changes of ownership and location it arrived at the Middleton Railway in 1991.

Here it had a complete overhaul, including a new boiler, and it came into traffic in 1999, but as a 'Thomas the Tank Engine' character as shown in the album photograph. By 2007 it had been returned to its original appearance and colour, but is undergoing an overhaul at the moment.

This 'Thomas the tank engine' character appearance is no longer how the engine appears. It has been returned to its original appearance as a typical Hunslet saddle tank by the Middleton Railway.

#1 is disguised as Thomas the tank engine and used for 'Thomas' events at this and other railways.
