This design by Joseph Beattie began life as a suburban tank engine for south London lines of the London and South Western Railway. The longevity of the loco is astonishing and the survival for so long is because of the exile of three of the class to Cornwall to work the Wenford Bridge branch near Bodmin. The three survived until 1962, over 60 years after the other class members had been withdrawn.

Sister locomotive, 30585 is normally based at Quainton Road
