An appeal has been launched by the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway for funds to repair a cracked rod on its flagship, former North Wales Narrow Gauge Railways Hunslet built 2-6-2T Works No. 901 "Russell" the worlds most famous Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive. A cracked rod has forced the locomotive out of action. A replacement rod will need to be forged, which will be expensive for the Railway. Details for this appeal can be found on their website and social media pages.

Russell will once again be running along the original Welsh Highland Railway as part of the lines centenary celebrations on 30th & 31st July. However, this time she will be running between Dinas and Rhyd Ddu, a first for preservation. Last time she visited the WHR, she ran between Pen-y-mount Junction and Beddgelert.

"Russell" made history on the 25th of November 2018 when the locomotive ran along a section of the original Welsh Highland Railway for the first time since 1937. This was part of a test run from its home at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway via the rail connection on to the Welsh Highland Railway itself. Which this was very successful as "Russell" will be running on the Welsh Highland again in 2019 as part of a series of events then.

Status should be "overhaul". Russell has been going through a major overhaul since 2005.
