The ex NCB Scotland, Giesl fitted Hunslet built Austerity 0-6-0ST (Works No. 3809) No. 18, was built in 1953, and started its working life with the National Coal Board in East Fife, Scotland at Wellesley Colliery. It later moved to the Dysart Central Workshops in Fife in 1963, where it was fitted with the Giesl ejector chimney and blastpipe, before returning to Wellesley Colliery in 1964. During 1966 to 1968 No. 18 had worked at Michael Colliery before returning to Wellesley Colliery until being withdrawn from service in 1972. No. 18 ended up at Thomas Muir Scrap Merchants at Balbeggie in Fife, Scotland where it stayed until it was saved for preservation in 1983. Three years later the locomotive moved to Shipyard Services at Brightlingsea in Essex, East Anglia for a full overhaul before going to the North Norfolk Railway, where it ran for a number of years. In 2006 No. 18 was sold to the Weardale Railway, but then two years later it was sold to a private owner who then moved it to the Great Central Railway. Today No. 18 is owned by David Wright, director of Locomotive Maintenance Services based in Loughborough, which have carried the overhaul returning No. 18 to service again for use at the Great Central Railway and the heritage railway circuit.
