This engine was driven by my uncle Hadyn Shepherd for most of his working life at the marine colliery.I was given rides on this engine from a toddler and ended up going on the engine many times when i ended up working at the pit.I used to go and see my uncle and have a talk.I keep looking to see if this engine is back in use. This engine deserves to be kept.

I was a young volunteer with the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway in 1985. Just after the end of the miners strike the NCB offered Menelaus to the railway and a group of us managed to get it onto a low loader in the pit yard and it was transported over to Blaenavon. I have a photograph of it on the loader in the yard which was published in the South Wales Argus at the time. It’s good to know it’s still around and hopefully being restored to operational condition.

Menelaus was still in use by the NCB in 1985, possibly making it the last working industrial conventional steam locomotive in the British Isles.
