In a suprise move, the ex War Department Hunslet built Austerity 0-6-0ST (Works No. 3180) No. 75130 "Antwerp", has been placed into the care of Southern Locomotives Ltd. for safekeeping by the National Coal Board Museum. "Antwerp" will now undergo restoration to full working order as part of Southern Locomotives Ltd’s fleet and when restored it will be able to keep all the earnings it provides for them when on hire to other preserved railways around the UK. "Antwerp" has a a very similar history to sister Austerity 0-6-0ST No. 75050 "Norman", as during the second world war the locomotive was sent to Belgium after D-Day hence its name.

Antwerp is one of many preserved engines of this type. Developed by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds, the 18inch saddle tank engine was adopted as a standard type by the Ministry of Supply during the Second World War, and built in large numbers by Hunslet and many other UK builders. Some retain their army colours in preservation. After the war, more were built, for industrial use and the type became widespread throughout the UK, especially at coal mines. A small number were bought by the LNER and used as dock shunters and as pilots at Darlington works. Antwerp is ex Coal Board, and currently has been stored for a number of years. When it was working, it was fitted with a great US style chime whistle, which could be heard from miles away!
