Built locallyin 1958, the steamer "Oregon" has long been a favorite of visitors, young and old alike,to the Oregon Zoo's Washington Park and Zoo Railroad located in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon. When the Pacific Railroad Preservation Association heard that funding apparently would not be allocated for the repairs needed to return the locomotive to operational status. Ten members met with the Zoo officials to express concern and offer their assistance in returning the "Oregon" to operational status.

The Zoo did the right thing and put the "Oregon" back on track. The PRPA has since provided needed improvements to the steamer's condition by fabricating new rings and a new piston with the only cost to the Zoo being the cost of materials.

The "Oregon" is a replica of the V&T "Reno" but liberties were taken with the scale so that a person could fit in the cab.  It was built in 1959 by the all-volunteer Oregon Locomotive Works for the Oregon Centennial Exposition in 1959, of which the zoo railway was part of.  This is the only locomotive they ever built.  It went to the zoo after the exposition closed where it has operated ever since.  Though it resembles a wood-burner, it has always been an oil-burner.  It weighs 9 tons and operates on 160psi.  Cylinders are 9x12, drivers and track gauge are both 30".  Ii is currently out of service because the boiler needed to be recertified, which has happened.  It probably won't be put back together until this fall at the earliest and will hopefully be back in operation for "ZooLights" the month of December.  We really don't know all the other specific details listed but we can take a pretty good guess with what we have.  If you would like any additional info, please don't hesitat to contact me.  I am a volunteer and a "fill-in" engineer at the zoo.

I believe this is supposed to be an oil-fired replica of Virginia & Truckee #11 "Reno" but I do not know if it was built exactly to scale.

This engine was not built by Crown.  I believe it was constructed  locally.
