The Festiniog Railway’s New-build Double-Fairlie 0-4-0+0-4-0T No. 8 "James Spooner" was successfully steamed for the very first time at the Festiniog Railway’s Boston Lodge Works today. This is a major milestone for the new steam locomotive as No. 8 is due to go into the paint shop soon for painting before the start of testing and running in trials. Its expected that No. 8 "James Spooner" will be launched into traffic during the Festiniog Railway’s Bygones Weekend in October 2023.

The Ffestiniog Railway No. 8 "James Spooner" is a new build replica of the original 1872 Avonside built one and is the first new build Double Fairlie 0-4-4-0T since the 1992 built No. 12 "David Lloyd George". The construction of No. 8 is using parts from No. 11 "Earl of Merioneth" and it is hoped that the locomotive will enter service in 2020.
