The class 48 was made up of only six locos. The first three were built by Hanomag for Pernik coal mine in 1931. These were 48.01-03. In 1948 three more were built, numbered 48.04-06. These locos were the only steam locos built in Bulgaria, and with works number 1, 48.04 was the first of this small output, so securing its place in Bulgarian railway history... and its survival.
