476 is operational. Rebuild is complete and she just ran the winter photo train in February. Please change status.

476 is nearing the end of its restoration and will be pulling the 2018 winter freight photo train! I got this info from the D&SNG Facebook page. Once 476 is in service 478 will go in for restoration.

so, if 481 and 482 are in the shops, how many engines does the D&S have and how many trains are they running?

Number 476 can physically be steamed up anytime, but she is not legal to operate. If she is to steam again, the crack in her frame will need repairs, new wheels & tires are needed, the boiler will need retubing, and new bearings will be needed. With lack of timing, the railroad has had enough trouble with their current operating locomotives. Engines 481, and 482 are under major overhauls, 473 just came out from her overhaul, and 478 will also be going in. This pretty much leaves 476 on the back burner sadly. Hopefully the railroad will find the time to overhaul old 476.

To clear the smog on this matter, 476 does NOT have a broken frame. The bolt holes in the cylinder saddle are worn out of round so that the cylinder block shifts with any movement of the valve gear. The engine is still operable as far as the 1472 day inspection goes and if she can pass her 1.5x hydro after the rebuild, she's good to go. The only thing is that this is a summer only job requiring machine shop space and time which is fine if no more wrist pins break.

The frame crack came from a snow bucking incident in March of 1952. I think she hit a rock and bent the frame and 45+years more service created the crack. I think that 473 and 480 are in line for repairs ahead of 476.

Visited Durango late June/early July 2003.  Employee who gave extensive roundhouse/yard tour advised that 476 has a cracked frame.  He further stated that plans are to lift boiler, repair frame and return to service when shop space/time is available.  FRA 15 year inspections/rebuilds on other locomotives has had priority, but plans are to rebuild 476 as mentioned above.

Doug, 476 is probably operable right now.  I read somewhere that it is back in steam and back in the pool.  You may want to confirm this with the D&SNG or Wes Barris of steamlocomotive.com but I am quite sure your baby is back on the rails.

Having grown up in Durango, I have always tried to keep up with what is gong on with "the Train". One of my High School teachers (and track coaches) was a fireman for D&RGW during summers. My uncle used to work at the power plant in Tacoma and he used to take our families up from Rockwood over the "highline" on a putt-car. Locomotive 476 was always my favorite. I remember setting pennies on the track as a kid in the 60's, waiting for the locomotives to smash them to a flat disk. I was disappointed to see that K-28 No. 476 is no longer operational and is in the roundhouse museum (I have not been to the museum since 1999). Is this a permanent situation, or will 476 be back on the rails sometime in the future?
