The overhaul on ex United States Army Transportation Corps. S160 Class 2-8-0 No. 6046 is in the final stages of completion at the Churnet Valley Railway as it was reported the locomotive has moved under steam in the yard at Cheddleton. Its planed for No. 6046 to visit the Strathspey Railway for the very first time for their "Flying Scotsman" Steam Gala from the 15th to 17th of September 2023. Which the visit will be the first time a United States Army Transportation Corps. S160 Class 2-8-0 locomotive has ever worked in Scotland, and the pairing of 6046 with No. 60103 (4472) "Flying Scotsman" will be the first time the worlds most famous steam locomotive would have been paired alongside an American built steam locomotive since her ill-fated tour of the United States of America and Canada from 1969 to 1972. If 6046 is not ready by then sister Churnet Valley based S160 2-8-0 No. 5197 will go to the Strathspey Railway for the Gala in her place.

This is the history of United States Army Transportation Corps. S160 2-8-0 No. 6046. 6046 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1945 and was among the last batch of S160 locomotives sent new to France during the last few months of the Second World War. It ended up in Hungary after the war where it was classified along with other S160 locomotives as the MAV 411 Class by the Hungarian State Railways, and 6046 became 411.144. She spent the majority of her working life on industrial lines of the Hungarian State Railways until the mid 1970’s when it was withdrawn from service. It was formally preserved in the Hungarian National Collection, however due to an administrative error she was sent for scrap but was saved for preservation in the UK by Martin Haines, a pilot, who brought her to the UK with the intention of restoring her when she was moved to Tyesley for restoration. In 2006 the locomotive was sold to her current owner Greg Wilson who then moved her to the Churnet Valley Railway for completion of its restoration and steamed in preservation for the first time in June 2012. Since then No. 6046 is now part of the locomotive fleet under Batt Holden Ltd. set up by Greg Wilson and has been a popular locomotive operating at the Churnet Valley and out on Gala and spot hire visits on the heritage railway circuit around the UK with sister S160 5197 since. Its even very popular as the Polar Express at Christmas time.
