The former War Department and Iraqi Railway 8F 2-8-0 No. 1429 (WD No. 547), is one of the amazing steam survivors. Built in 1941 by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Scotland, it was sent out to Iraq during the Second World War and was one of 12 LMS 8F 2-8-0 locomotives acquired by the Iraqi State Railways after the war between 1945 and 1948. There was an attempt to repatriate this locomotive back to the UK back in 1990 but sadly it was thwarted by the outbreak of the first Gulf War. No. 1429 was last heard of in 2014, when plans were being made for a cosmetic restoration, but nothing has been heard of it since then??

Undoubtedly one of the London Midland & Scottish Railway design class 8F freight locos as built for the War Department during World War 2. The Army used them in Iraq as British troops were protecting the then Persian oilfields from Nazi attack.

They were adapted to their location by being oil fired, right hand drive, with air brakes and often with a second cab roof to reduce cab temperatures. An interesting survivor from both UK and Iraqi history. It would be good to see a restoration to its WD appearance for display in Iraq or, if that is not possible, for repatriation, like the three Turkish 8Fs to the same specification.
