Status may need to be changed to static display until further notice. Following a minor derailment in 2018, this locomotive has not operated in two years. Its air compressor and feedwater pump are currently off the locomotive being used on C62-2.

C61-2 is operational, albeit not certified for mainline use. The full list of serviceable locomotives at Umekouji Museum Depot (now called the Kyoto Railroad Museum, since the museum absorbed its sister institution in Osaka a year or so back) is given below. Locomotives here are operational but not certified for mainline use, unless otherwise noted: No. C622 (Class C62, 4-6-4) No. C612 (Class C61, 4-6-4) No. C571 (Class C57, 4-6-2) Mainline certified No. C56160 (Class C56, 2-6-0) Mainline certified No. D51200 (Class D51, 2-8-2) Mainline certified in 2017 No. 8630 (Class 8620, 2-6-0) No. B2010 (Class B20, 0-4-0T) Hope this helps.

This engine is correctly identified as C61-2. C62-2 is also at Umekoji but is famous for its iconic "hato" on the smoke deflector - which this engine lacks. Further, the front number is quite clear. I have pictures of both engines, with C61-2 under steam in 2010. I believe C62-2 to be operational.

This locomotive, identified as class C61, is actually a C62 class. If you enlarge the photo, you can see the correct number, C62 - 2, on the cab side number plate.
