The tour guy there said that if they ever get a big grant to restore it they would, but it is still extremely impractical and there are better things for them to invest in

I have just visited the park today and yes there is a diesel motor in the firebox. The two steam domes have vents in them to allow air into the motor. The sand dome was left untouched. When maintaining the motor, it is slid down two rails in the boiler (where the tubes used to be) to the front of the smoke box.

This locomotive does not run on coal or oil anymore. The boiler was no longer good so the tubes and other guts were taken out and a diesel engine was installed. I talked to the crews and they said when it comes time to repair it, it's like working in a submarine. So I guess you could call this a steam-diesel hybrid locomotive

This engine now runs on oil and is sometimes fired-up for special events.
