Mike Taylor, writing in the bulletin of the Friends of the National Railway Museum, Bulawayo reports that 398 awaits overhaul and conversion to New Zealand loading gauge. With its big boiler this is seen as problematic, and the 54 inch driving wheels also are a problem as there is no operating wheel lathe in New Zealand capable of turning them.
