489 is currently out of service as she is undergoing her 1472-day exam in Antonito, CO but is expected to return to service for opening day this year.

The magazine STEAM TODAY reports that this locomotive is operational or will be very soon. Is this true?

#489 is still undergoing restoration at Chama. It was supposed to be completed in time for the 2007 season, but the crew didn't get it back up and running in time. The railroad hopes to have the engine back in operation by the 2008 season and then start restoration on Engine #463.

As of May 2006, no serious work has been preformed upon the locomotive, now resting in the Chama "Swamp"

Currently awaiting an ultrasound test.  Most likely won't be out for the '05 season but a grant from the state of New Mexico has been given to the C&TSRR to help with the restoration of 489.
