The #5 is almost ready to pull out and fire up, just finishing touches and she will be ready to go. The 2010 season will have the Big 6 and the 11(already fired up) with the Heisler, the 4 and the 5 as backups.

Shay #5 was apparently taken down for a major overhaul (flues etc) after the 2005 season.   I saw her in the shop on 7-13-07 and the crew there reports she is fully ready to go again pending receipt of some FRA paperwork.

Shay #5 celebrated her 100th birthday on August 27, 2005. She has worked at Cass for her entire career, and is expected to continue that century-old tradition in 2006.

It is now known for a fact that this locomotive (Shay 5) is the longest continuously operating of ANY type of locomotive in the United States (98 years)...possibly the World!
