Ely-Thomas Shay #5 was supposed to be restored in 1989. But now in 2017it is still in pieces, and sitting on a flatcar! This shay also served as the inspiration for the extremely popular Bachmann Co. G1 scale model for garden railways! It does Not say anything good about the so called national railroad museum when one of your most popular locomotives instead looks likes a scrap yard reject, just sitting in pieces for OVER 27 YEARS!!!!!

Shay #5 was operational when delivered to NRM...didn't take too long for them to "scrap it". Susposedly going to be cosmetically restored in 2009, but NRM has scrapping 25 freight cars and locomotives as higher priority.

This engine is in sad shape from when I saw it as a kid in the 80's . It is on a pc of track that goes no where and will probably never bee touched again !! I am not sure where all the parts are and I have not had any good luck with anyone know at the Museum. I am a new member there and willbe trying this summer to get a little info and maybe gt to do somne work on the engine . I worked at Mid continent railroad in northfreedom wi . My father was cheif mechanical officer for steam when they were still running steam a number of years and we both have some interest in this shay . So we will see what happens
